ABOUT
US:
I’m Eric Rauhanen with Silver Fox
Outfitters a full time outfitter here in Alberta. I
run a series of hunts for my clients that cover
several species. We start the year off with a spring
bear hunt in the High Level area in NW Alberta. Here
we maintain two small camps, this lets us cut down
on travel time to and from the bait sites. We hunt a
two tag area where almost everyone gets a bear and
we average about a 150% opportunity success rate.
It’s a real fun hunt.
After a summer break we start our fall of with our
early season bow hunts in the western units. We then
start our Elk rut hunt in the Edson area. This is no
doubt our most difficult hunt. Clients book because
they want a reasonable price, fair chase hunt with a
realistic chance of tagging a bull. If you want a
guaranteed chance at a 375+ B&C bull book a day
at a game ranch, I can refer you to a few if
that’s your idea of elk hunting.
From the elk hunts we split into two camps one is in
a bow hunting area where we first hunt rutting elk
and then move to moose rut hunting. Our success on
this hunt fluctuates a fair bit, real bow hunters
can understand the reasons. The 2nd camp is our
moose rut rifle camp. We hunt several areas at this
time all the way from mountain zones with snow
covered peaks nearby to the gentle rolling
foothills. We do very well on this hunt, one year
had us tag four bulls in four days by four clients.
After a two week break, we move one of our camps to
a late season (a rifle hunting in Nov only area)
moose & elk tent camp hunt. The guys that can
invest enough time do very good on this hunt. On
this post rut hunt, we travel the extensive network
of oil/logging roads as well as the cutlines/powerlines
looking for bulls and sign left in the snow. This is
a really enjoyable experience and a lot different
then the early season hunts.
At
the same time in a different area we have a small
whitetail hunt going on. The hunters are put up in a
lodge or motels and eat in a restaurant. We normally
hunt the entire day, with the most common method
being stand hunting scraplines/game trails and
watching travel corridors on cutlines &
powerlines. The last few winters have been extremely
mild and Alberta has never had as many deer as does
now. In 2005 all our clients tagged a buck or had
chances.

DEER HUNTING:
Alberta is famous for its great
deer hunting and its giant trophy bucks. Our area is
full of large whitetail bucks. The whitetails go
into rut late in November. This is when we produce
the largest Alberta giants for our rifle hunting
clients. We hunt the boreal forest fringe area were
the mature bucks get a chance to grow because of the
abundance of security cover. We put our dedicated
hunters onto stands to watch travel corridors and
scraplines. Few things can match the excitement of
having a giant Alberta buck in your sights.

Whitetail hunting is excellent during the rut. The
bucks are moving around a lot looking for receptive
does. A light snow is common at this time, and
trophy bucks are easier to find. We invest a
considerable amount of time hunting from ground
blinds and tree stands. Few things that can match
watching a buck work his scrape line in your
direction and into range or coming in to check out
his territory after hearing your guide rattle. Our
area has excellent access with many oil / logging
roads and countless miles of cutlines. We use
four-wheel drive and all-terrain vehicles
extensively. We normally invest entire days on
stand, rattling, spotting cutlines, or even
occasionally pushing bush.

We
are so confident in our hunting area and our guides
that we are offering a performance guarantee. Any
hunter paying full price and hunting the recommended
hunt, who doesn't get a shooting opportunity can
come the following year and repeat the same hunt for
half price.

Our Whitetail hunting area is located a short 2
hours drive west of the Edmonton International
airport, near the town of Edson in the beautiful
foothills, agricultural fringe area of west central
Alberta. We hunt the forested farm fringe area where
the big bucks are.

An
additional two species licenses can be purchased
optionally, as can a bird game license that we
highly recommend.

BEAR HUNTING:
The Silver Fox Outfitters
"two tag" hunters have averaged more then
a 150% shooting rate over the last 5 five years.
This is one of the highest in the province.
We've managed this by: regulating the number of
hunters we take, using fresh quality bait hauled to
the hunting area in our own 28 ft reefer trailer,
setting strategically located baits, and by insuring
that our guides know the area we hunt. Our past
success rates speak for themselves and when compared
to the possibly less than 50% hunter success in
other eastern provinces/states, it's easy to see
that Alberta is the place to be for fantastic bear
hunting. Eric Rauhanen and the Silver
Fox Outfitters “team” are the right
choice for you.

Our area has one of the highest trophy bear
populations in North America with about 10 to
15% being color phased. Light hunting pressure
allows us to produce a higher percentage of larger,
older boars for our hunters. This is representative
of a mature population. Bears are so plentiful here
that each hunter is allowed two tags.

We
use beavers, butcher scraps, bakery scraps,
restaurant grease, oats & molasses for bait
and it's hauled to site and stored in a 28 ft
reefer semi trailer. Our baits are set when
there's still snow on the ground, several weeks
prior to your arrival. Maintained regularly they
become the bears primary food source. Baits are
accessible by either four-wheel drive trucks,
all-terrain vehicles or jet boat. As nocturnal
animals, bears are hunted primarily in the evening.
Hunters are taken to active bait sites in the late
afternoon. Portable tree stands are the preferred
method in our area. They are 12 to 15 feet up and 15
to 20 yards from the bait. We are quite far north
and the sun sets late. We are normally finished
hunting by 10:30 p.m. and out of the bush by
midnight.

The limit is two (2) bears, each tag is purchased on
top of the $2700. Your second tag can be purchased
optionally at anytime during your hunt or at a
discounted price prior to arrival.

Our bait hunting area is located near the remote
town of High Level in the beautiful boreal forest
area of northwestern Alberta (WMU 534, 534, and
536). We spot and stalk hunt in none baiting areas (WMU
537, 342 and 346).

MOOSE/ELK
HUNTING:

We
do the bulk of our Moose hunting in November and
hunting is excellent . The
moose have finished rutting and are concentrated in
tamarack muskegs. A light snow is common at this
time, and trophy bulls are easy to spot and tracks
easy to find. Our area has excellent access with
many oil / logging roads and countless miles of
cutlines. We use four-wheel drive and all-terrain
vehicles extensively. We normally invest entire days
spotting cutlines, looking for high moose
concentrations, or running moose pushes.

Our 12 day 1 on 1 rifle moose
hunters traditionally come very close to a 100%
success rate on opportunities. We’ll work hard to
make it happen again next year.
Our primary area has high moose densities,
controlled resident moose hunter numbers, much
better access, and many areas have Bowhunting only
during the rut. Our bow hunters should expect a 50%
shooting success rate on the 12 day 1 on 1 hunt for
moose; our rifle hunters an average close to 90%.

Elk
hunting is available for the hunter wishing a
challenging yet exciting & enjoyable hunting
opportunity. Our area has a ever increasing herd of
Elk that we bugle in during the rut. Elk hunting is
open during the rut for both bow and rifle hunters
in different WMU’s in our area. We also offer a
November rifle Elk hunt (this makes for a superb
combo with either Whitetail or Moose). At 30% on the
recommended 12 day hunt our success rate is far
above that of the resident hunters.

We are so confident
in our hunting area and our guides that we are
offering a performance guarantee. Any hunter paying
full price and hunts the recommended 12 day hunt one
on one hunt, who doesn't get a shooting opportunity
can come the following year and repeat the same hunt
for half price.

OTHER
OPPORTUNITIES:
GROUSE
HUNTING: Both
ruff grouse and spruce grouse are very plentiful and
are a lot of fun to hunt in the midday period
whether bow or rifle hunting. Licensing for game
birds is optional.
WOLF HUNTING:
A
healthy wolf population exists in our area. Wolves
are very wary and don't offer hunters a second
chance, but the opportunity is there for the
vigilant hunter. Licenses are available in addition
to a regular big game license. Special wolf and
coyote hunts are conducted in Dec./Jan.

FISHING:
Arctic grayling and
rainbow trout are abundant in the creeks as are the
northern pike in the many lakes. As some of our
moose calling is done from canoes, a little fishing
at midday can be a relaxing break that the wearied
hunter needs.
Additional
licenses can be purchased optionally, as can a
wolf/coyote and a bird game license both of which we
highly recommend.
LOCATION
Our
primary hunting area is located a short 2 hour drive
west of the Edmonton International Airport, near the
town of Edson in the beautiful foothills,
agricultural fringe area of west central Alberta.
Our
hunting areas have some of the highest moose
densities in the province and a large percentage of
provinces larger Whitetails come from some of the
WMU’s that we hunt.
Other advantages of our area include: easier / more
cost effective travel arrangements for our hunters,
excellent access, controlled resident numbers and
Bowhunting only during the rut. We hunt the best
area in Alberta for moose and an area that has
excellent elk and whitetail numbers.
